US President Donald Trump on Wednesday expressed strong optimism about an upcoming India–US trade agreement, calling it a “good deal” while praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership during his visit to the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.
Speaking to Moneycontrol on the sidelines of the forum, Trump said he held deep respect for Prime Minister Modi and described their relationship as genuine and friendly.
“I have great respect for your Prime Minister. He’s a fantastic man and a friend of mine. We are going to have a good deal,” Trump said.
Trump’s comments come at a time when the United States has imposed tariffs of up to 50% on Indian goods — among the highest globally. While both countries have reiterated that negotiations are ongoing, a final agreement has yet to be reached.
Despite the tariff pressure, diplomatic sources on both sides maintain that dialogue remains active and constructive.
Earlier this month, newly appointed US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor expressed confidence in the strength of India-US relations. He described Trump and Modi’s bond as authentic and said the US President may visit India within the next two years.
“True partners may disagree sometimes, but they ultimately resolve differences,” Gor said.
He added that while trade remains important, cooperation between India and the US extends to security, counter-terrorism, energy, technology, education, and healthcare.
Gor, who has previously travelled globally with Trump, reaffirmed that the US President often speaks highly of Modi.
“His friendship with Prime Minister Modi is real,” Gor said, recalling Trump’s reflections during a New Year’s dinner.
Recently, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick claimed that the trade deal stalled because PM Modi did not personally call Trump. India’s Ministry of External Affairs strongly rejected this version, stating that both nations had been actively negotiating since February last year.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that five official negotiation rounds had already taken place and that both sides remained committed to a mutually beneficial agreement.
He also confirmed that Trump and Modi had spoken eight times in 2025 alone on various strategic and economic matters.
Global investors are closely monitoring India–US trade developments, as the agreement could reshape bilateral trade, supply chains, and regional economic cooperation.
Analysts believe that a successful trade pact would strengthen economic stability and geopolitical alignment between the world’s largest democracy and the world’s largest economy.
For job seekers and future leaders, this situation offers powerful lessons:
Trust built over time creates opportunities in difficult negotiations.
Modern leaders succeed by balancing confidence with respect.
Clear engagement keeps partnerships strong even during disagreements.
Great deals are built through persistence, not pressure alone.
Today’s employers value leaders who can:
Negotiate with integrity
Maintain professional relationships
Manage conflict maturely
Think long-term
Represent organizations responsibly
Leadership is no longer about authority — it is about credibility.
Candidates preparing for leadership roles should focus on:
Strategic communication
Emotional intelligence
Cross-cultural understanding
Negotiation skills
Ethical decision-making
Tomorrow’s leaders will be those who build bridges, not barriers.
Trump’s praise of PM Modi and optimism on India-US trade talks reflect an important truth:
Strong leadership is built on respect, dialogue, and vision.
For professionals, the same rule applies — success grows when relationships are valued as much as results.
